Scope and Contents Henry Avery, who was a descendant of George W. Smith, an early farmer in Waltham, donated this collection of items. George W. Smith (1818-1875) was the son of Nathan Smith, Jr. and Elizabeth (Wellington) Smith and the husband of Mary Ann Towne Gay. He was the father of Ellen Maria Smith who married Charles Horatio Avery, the donor’s grandfather.
