War diary images, 1944

 File — Box: 1

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This collection consists of various items pertaining to the World War Two service of Richard S. Anderson, including what appears to be a draft of a memoir as well as images and transcriptions from his war diary. Richard Anderson served as a medical officer in the war, attached to the U.S. Navy Seabees.

Though Richard Anderson was not directly connected to Waltham, he served in the Seabees alongside Dr. Douglas Butman, who was from Waltham and is mentioned several times in both the diaries and memoir found here. The Douglas and Ruth Butman Collection does not include any information about Dr. Butman's war experiences, and these papers of Richard Anderson therefore serve as a supplement to that material. The correspondence file in this collection includes a printout of an email between Richard Anderson's grandson and Dr. Butman's son, which explains the context of the war diary.

Also included in these papers are the memoir of Patricia B. Farley, who served as a "Wren" (member of the Women's Royal Naval Service) in World War Two. Farley was stationed in Scotland alongside Dr. Douglas Butman.
